People Who Eat Darkness – Book Recommendation – True Crime Non-Fiction Must Read

Media Type: Book
Type: Non-Fiction
Subject: True Crime

This is the story of Lucie Blackman, a young English woman who disappeared in Japan and then was later found to have been murdered. The author describes the events leading up to and what happened after Lucie's disappearence. How her family refused to stop looking for her and the cultural differences between the criminal and justice systems of Japan and England.
It is obvious that the author was fascinated by the events, people and consequences of this horrific story. But Mr. Parry’s book is in no way sensationalized. His journalistic integrity is present in every sentence. I was fascinated with the way he was able to illustrate each player’s life and the judgments made upon them by relatives, friends, the public and themselves. He shows how easily people “blamed” the victim because of the circumstances leading to her death and how even the victim's father is berated for what some people considered immoral choices and “abnormal” behavior. Mr. Parry’s greatest achievement, though, is how he manifests the presence of the alleged killer even when his name is unknown. He is always there, lurking, enigmatic and terrifying.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in true crime but also to anyone who would enjoy a well-researched book that is finely written in a style that is intelligent and accessible. This truly is a fascinating story that might have become a lurid tale had it not been for the compassion and writing skill of the author.

NOTE:  Some of the details in this book are explicit.

NOTE TO AUTHORS: An excellent book for those wanting to research serial killers, murderers and the cultural differences that exist with regard to social status of women, foreigners, crime, the police, the press and the judicial systems in Japan and the United Kingdom.
