Title: The Day of the Triffids
Media Type: Book
Type: Fiction
Genre: Science Fiction
A man named Bill Masen wakes up one morning to discover the
world has gone blind. Yet he can still see. Everything he knew is gone, changed
forever by a destructive meteor shower. The dangers he understood have vanished
and he has to learn to navigate through a new series of troubles unlike anything
he has ever experienced.
First published in 1951, The Day
of the Triffids is set in England in a post-apocalyptic society. Told in
the first person, the reader discovers this new blind world through the eyes of
its hero, Bill Masen. In addition to having to deal with the fact that sighted
people are a minority, Bill is also challenged by the triffids, giant deadly mobile
plants.
The book is
structured like a fantasy/road trip. The characters move through a variety of
newly created micro-societies, each having decided to base their small world on
some pre-apocalyptic structure – religious, militaristic etc. None are perfect,
some are positively dangerous.
If you love a good
page turner than The Day of Triffids
is for you. Wyndham’s style is fluid. The narrative is never dull and the
action never lags. Even the explanatory passages are expressed in an active
voice. Wyndham doesn’t keep his characters in any one place for long. He builds
great suspense and anxiety by never allowing his characters to truly rest or to
forget that there is as much danger in encountering a killer triffid as meeting
a fellow human.
The Day of the Triffids is a must read
for anyone who loves science fiction or who wants to write science fiction. It
is imaginative and literate. These are just two of the reasons it has become an
influential classic and been in print for over sixty years. I enjoyed this book
very much and highly recommend it.
